Nikko Toshogu Shrine

Much more than a temple

Nikko Toshogu Temple is much more than a temple, it's an amazing place located in the middle of a forest whose land smokes due to volcanic activity in the area. This sacred building complex houses the tomb of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu and 2 of the most influential figures of the time: Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Minamoto Yoritomo. There are a host of Shinto and Buddhist buildings here and there in a magical place, so much so that we don't know where to point the camera. No wonder the place is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. If you were in the position of having to choose 1 place in Japan to visit it would be difficult.
