Umberto Masetti (May 1926 - May 2006) was an Italian motorbike driver, twice world champion in 500cc in 1950 and 1952. He competed in several races here in Denia. The statue is a work by the Cuello forge -Federico and Jaime Cuello - donated by Classic Motor Club Denia.
In 1958, American film producer Samuel Bronston came to Denia to shoot a movie. It was quite an event, lasting four months, and hundreds of residents participated as extras, dressed as soldiers, sailors or pirates. In 2008, to celebrate the 50th anniversary, the statue of Captain Jones, like a Playmobil model in bronze, two metres high, was inaugurated by the local artist Jose Luis Saldanya.
This original steel structure can be seen in the middle of a roundabout at the beginning of the road to the marina. It was made by Valencian sculptor Andreu Alfaro, and represents the sun's rays, which aren't exactly lacking in this Alicante town.
