Praia do Futuro is the most famous and popular beach in Fortaleza, and the largest in extent. It is about 11 km from downtown Fortaleza. In the restaurants here you can enjoy recipes based on fish, lobsters and shellfish. The nightlife is good, as there are several bars and shows.
Built in the old port area, the Art and Culture Centre is located in Praia de Iracema. Its attractions include the museum of contemporary art, a theatre, some cinemas, an ampitheatre, a cafe, and a planetarium. It's all free, and there are concerts and other cultural activities held here. On Sunday afternoons, there are fun activities for children. In the surrounding area there are several bars, restaurants and artisan shops. On Friday and Saturday, the area comes alive with the sound of samba. I love it!
This is definitely one of the tourist icons of the city, with the statue of Iracema. Iracema is the main character and the title of a book by Joss de Alencar. There are three statues scattered throughout the city: one at Iracema Beach, another at Mucuripe Beach, and the last at Lake Messejana. My favourite is the first, lit up at night. By the statue is a small craft market in the afternoons, and at night children and young people gather on scooters, skates and bikes.
This is the most famous water park in the city of Fortaleza. Although its main attractions are the water slides, there's plenty here to suit all tastes and ages. The giant water slides are what makes it worth the entrance of 130 reals - they'll almost make you forget the extortionate prices of drinks and snacks inside the park (300ml of beer for 9 reals!). Each different section has its own special charms for young and old alike. The most fun attractions are probably the Atlantis and the Morea Black, slides with buoys for two or three people, which can be used completely safely. The only problem is that the park is open from 11 am, and closes at 17h and the time really flies inside. Many of the attractions close an hour earlier. You can easily spend all day here...
This is the perfect place to come at the end of the afternoon to watch the sunset. Located right at the beginning of the Avenida Beira Mar prominade, the starting point for many day trips. In front, there's a bar which has the best beer in town!
The Japanese garden is the perfect place to visit in the afternoon. It's similar to the one you'll see in the city of Buenos Aires, but is home to more than 50 species of plants. Located on Avenida Beira Mar, it fills an area of more than 1,900 m, and allows the visitor to enjoy an authentic Japanese environment, with streams and lakes and even a waterfall (symbolising strength and youth) and a bridge (symbolising the connection between Earth and Heaven). It's open to the public every day from 8 am to 00h with free admission.
Pirata Bar is one of the attractions of Fortaleza itself. It is only open on a Monday. All of the music is live, such as the stylish Forró, Axé and other great artists. It's cheaper to book your tickets via your hotel. July Trindade proclaimed that it is the busiest place in the world on a Monday and not without reason.
This beach is located down Mucuripe, on the edge of Avenida Beira-Mar in the city of Fortaleza. It is surrounded by several restaurants which specialise in seafood. Here, you can enjoy fresh lobster, shrimp, and other fish at affordable prices. You can take a boat trip, which runs for 2 hours at 4pm, coinciding with the beautiful sunset. Due to all the boats and rafts, you can't go swimming.
I've lived in Fortaleza for 27 years and had never been to Coco Park. One morning I decided to go jogging in the park just to check it out. Ever since, it has been one of my favorite places in the city.
The fish market in the city of Fortaleza is at the end of Beira. There are about thirty stalls selling all kinds of seafood. On the site you can haggle over prices, and you'll leave with a styrofoam box containing your selection, the best way to transport it while keeping it fresh until you get it home. You can buy fish, prawns, lobsters, oysters, squid, octopus and more - all excellent quality, and some really good prices. If you're feeling hungry, there are some stalls where you can eat on the spot. It's a rustic but picturesque spot, with great views over the coast. A nice place to watch the sunset. Average: pink shrimp (Kg): R $ 22.00 to R $ 30.00 white shrimp (kg): $ 15 00 to $ 20.00 lobster (Kg): R $ 30,00 to R $ 40,00 beer (600 ml): R $ 4.00 to $ 6.00 In general, in cash.
Visiting the Jose de Alencar theatre is undoubtedly the best way to immerse yourself in the culture of the city. Opened in 1910, this theatre has become a real artistic landmark, a tourist centre and one of the main symbols of Fortaleza. Every month, they have a programme of concerts and shows. Tours take place every hour, from Tuesday to Friday: 08:00, 09 : 00, 10:00, 11: 00, 13:00, 14, 15 and 16. On Saturday, Sunday and holidays: 13, 14, 15 and 16. The visits include the 1910 building, and the gardens of Burle Marx Art Centre. Cost: R $ 2.00 (students) or R $ 4.00.
There are tons of things to do in Fortaleza, but the first should be a stroll along the beautiful coastline The city was built along 15 miles of beautiful coastline and even now, many of the top attractions in Fortaleza are location right on the water.
The historic 17th-century Dutch fortress on the Praia da Barra do Ceará is one of the most essential things to see in Fortaleza, and is also the namesake of the city. The Baroque lighthouse is another of the most iconic Fortaleza attractions and is found on Praia Mucuripe.
After a morning at the beach, what's better than an afternoon of culture? Exploring the José de Alencar Theatre and the Museum of Ceará are two of the most notable Fortaleza activities for eager culture vultures.
