Chapel of Santa Cruz
In 1931, this chapel was named as a place of Cultural Interest. It is right next to the Roman Bridge. It stands on a dolmen (5000-3000 BC). Under King Favila, it was consecrated in the year 737. The chapel was erected to house the Cross of Oak, later renamed the Victoria Cross. The current building is a reconstruction that was enacted by Luis Menéndez Pidal in the postwar period. In his CRIPA lies the dolmen in which according to legend was buried King Favila. We found under the Chapel of Santa Cruz a Neolithic dolmen burial mound which was built in 737 to protect Victoria Cross and was declared an artistic monument in 1931. In 2010, 3200 cyclists gathered at one of the tourist capitals of the Principality and gateway to the Picos de Europa, Cangas de Onis. A former professional cyclist, the German Reimud Dietzen with four of his former teammates, went ahead of this army of cyclists, parading through towns like Arriondas, Ribadesella, Porrúa, Corao, Covadonga. Beginning at the foot of his ascension to Basilica de Covadonga Lakes with a blazing sun made the climb harder but the magnificent scenery and the stands filled with followers and companions made it easier. This tour has only recently been open to the public. Beautiful landscape somehow reminiscent of the enchanted city of Cuenca or Cabarceno Zoo. Some old cinnabar mines, manganese and iron. The weather was not the most appropriate for an outdoor visit. Rain, fog, you had to be careful not to slip. The guided path we took in the lakes of Covadonga, where the bar is, lakes which we did not see for the thick fog. You reach the Visitor Center Pedro Pidal and then the car park. It can be done in reverse. I loved it. With good weather it must be awesome.
