We stayed at the Barcelo hotel more for its famous name than for its location, but we found an old hotel in desperate need of a major overhaul. Yes, the rooms were very clean and the hotel could be considered upscale. From the hotel to downtown, it was a 15 minute walk maximum, while a taxi might run 10 €, depending on the taxi driver you get (they love to speed!).
Meininger is a chain of hotels located around Germany (they also have one in London). The Cologne location is located near the center of the city, about 15 minutes away by public transport, or about a 30 min walk. They have a breakfast buffet, which isn't included in the price, as well as a small bar to have a drink, and a room to play pool or watch a movie.
The hotel is fairly close to the Cologne city center, only about a ten minute walk away . The hotel boasted very friendly staff and it even had its own garage. The room was spacious, with a fully stocked minibar and free internet. They even offer a free cot. The breakfast buffet was included in the price of the room and it was quite good, but it didn't have anything for people on a diet. As negative, which in May was cold when we went in the room and there was no heat, just a split arie conditioning was scheduled only for cold air. The only heating was in the bathroom. Noted that the entire hotel is decorated with black and white photographs of women's artistic Vogue type, etc.

This hotel is very central. You can walk everywhere and parking, if you are driving, isn't difficult. The rooms are very comfy and clean, but not fancy. Breakfast was alright, and the only meal we had at the hotel. I would definitely stay at this hotel again during a future visit to Cologne so I recommend it for the best value in the area.
Located 3 km from the center of Cologne, tram # 1 takes you there in 5 minutes so it's well connected, plus it's very close to the university area. It's very modern and clean with spacious rooms, great beds, all kinds of details and an excellent breakfast. An ideal hotel for a trip to Cologne plus it's cheap enough to be 4-star, well deserved.
Cologne is a leading German city of trade, commerce, and tourism. Cologne hotels are spread out across the city and found in almost every neighborhood. Hotels in Cologne are affordable by European standards, and generally offer a high standard of service and cleanliness.
Deciding where to stay in Cologne is first a function of what neighborhood you want to be in. The downtown area has more than 50 hotels, and several dozen are within a few blocks of the main train station. More are along the river front. More Cologne accommodations are in key business and tourist areas of the city, and there are plenty of Cologne lodging options by the airport as well -- in fact, some of the airport hotels can easily be reached on foot from the arrivals terminal. Cologne hotel deals are easiest to find during the weekend, when business travelers are less numerous, and also during the fall, winter, and spring, when there are fewer visitors. Expect prices to rise mid-week, during festivals and holidays, and in the summer, when the city fills with tourists from around the world. Lodging in Cologne also includes hostels, which are particularly useful for young backpackers, and apart-hotels, which are suited toward longer stays.
